Let's kick off with 'Uncle Dick' running in the opening apprentice handicap at Goodwood, scheduled for 17:25. A 7-year-old experienced gelding, trotting over a distance of 1m 1f 11y on good going, seems like he's been around the block a few times, hasn't he? With live odds sitting at a lengthy 15, the chap hasn't shown much promise recently, with a concerning strike rate of 0% in both the last 30 and 180 days. The combination of Oliver Carmichael aboard, a jockey with no wins in the past two weeks, and trainer Eve Johnson Houghton recording only a few wins lately, doesn't scream confidence. However, given the competition, he’s still our picked champ for this race, thanks to statistical voodoo not apparent to the mortal eye. Next up, 'Port Erin', a 5-year-old lad handled by Jack Doughty, an apprentice jockey with a 29% win rate in the last two weeks, something to cheer for! The horse has a fair strike rate over the last 180 days with a win, offering him up at odds of 6, which seems like a value bet in this context. Trainer A W Carroll has been having a season to be proud of, with a solid 14% win rate recently. Then, we have 'Taskheer', another seasoned campaigner wandering the tracks at the ripe age of 7. With considerably long odds of 21, one might not rush to the bookies for this one. Despite partnering with Jack Dace, who’s not exactly firing on all cylinders currently based on his 11% win rate over the past 60 days, Taskheer could still surprise us, or maybe not. Consistency isn’t exactly Taskheer’s middle name, but with horse racing, sometimes the long shot paces out front! Looking down the line, 'Latin', despite the live_price of a tempting 4.33 and sitting just outside our top three, might be one to watch if the top picks falter.
